Portable appliance testing, also known as PAT, is quiet often overlooked in rented accommodation, factories, offices, warehouses, Hotels, shops, School/Universities and construction tools. Most of the time things run smoothly and there’s never an issue, however, when an issue does arise all sort of problems can occur, your PC stops working when you’re in the middle of an important document, an appliance stops working while in the middle of a wash cycle, or worst of all there is a fire.
Today one of our electricians Tom Court was called out, after a pressure washer caught fire and tripped the consumer unit. Thankfully nobody was hurt and the fire was contained and put out quickly. We ran some tests and restored the electrical supply in a short space of time.
PAT testing should be done regularly some items are used more often than others, therefore they need to be tested more often. For example;
All rented accommodation should be done yearly, while Hotels, School and Offices should be done every four years.
All industrial sites, including commercial kitchens should have Portable and Handheld equipment tested every 6 months. Stationary, IT and Moveable equipment should be tested every 12 months.
School/Universities equipment should be tested every 12 months.
If you’re not sure if an appliance has ever been tested you will find a sticker on the plug to say it has passed and the date it was tested. You should also get a report to say how many items have been tested and if they have passed or failed.
So, take some time out to check all your portable appliances and if you have any doubt, call JCE on 01373 455 690 and we can come out and provide a free estimate for you. Its always better to be safe than sorry.
